Application

Knauf Breatheline is used as vapour permeable underlay in sealed and ventilated pitched roofs of domestic, industrial and commercial buildings. It can be used in the following applications:
  • Cold Breathing Roof: In combination with Crown Loft Roll for the thermal insulation of pitched roofs at ceiling level with Knauf Breatheline as the vapour permeable underlay
  • Between Rafter Insulation:
    • In combination with Rocksilk Underline for thermal insulation between rafters 200mm deep of warm pitched roofs with Knauf Breatheline as the vapour permeable underlay.
    • In combination with Crown FrameTherm Batt for thermal insulation between rafters 150mm deep of warm pitched roofs, combined with Polyfoam Linerboard with Knauf Breatheline as the vapour permeable underlay.
    • In combination with Crown Loft Roll, Crown FrameTherm Batt and Polyfoam Linerboard for the thermal insulation of new-build living roof designs and the conversion of existing room-in-the-roof designs with Knauf Breatheline as the vapour permeable underlay
  • Over Rafter Insulation: In combination with Polyfoam Sarking Board for over rafter thermal insulation of pitched roofs where the rafters are at 600mm centres. Polyfoam Pitched Roofboard should be used for other spacings. Rocksilk Roofline may be used where a mineral wool option is preferred with Knauf Breatheline as the vapour permeable underlay

Installation

Knauf Breatheline is used in numerous applications. Below is a summary of its installation in 3 of the most common.

Cold breathing roof
Knauf Breatheline is pulled taught and laid directly over the timber trussed rafters. Tiles or slates on battens and counter battens on top of Knauf Breatheline.

Between rafter insulation
Knauf Breatheline should be pulled taught and fitted from eaves to eaves, parallel with the rafters. Edge laps should be formed over rafters to form an airtight layer. Counter battens, 50 x 25mm, to be nailed to the rafters before fixing tiling battens.

Over rafter insulation
Knauf Breatheline is pulled taut and laid directly over the insulation. 50 x 32mm counter battens are nailed through Knauf Breatheline and Polyfoam Sarking Boards and into the rafters using spiral fixings such as Helifix Inskew 600 or Buildex RG, with minimum penetration into the rafter of 30mm. Tiling battens are laid across the roof and nailed into the counter battens. Tiles should be stacked so that they bear directly over the rafters. Finally, the roofing tiles or slates are fixed, to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
